Things nobody tells you about moving alone

Moving boxes stacked in an empty apartment

Everyone will tell you about the logistics: the deposit, the truck, the way your furniture never quite fits the new place the way it fit the old one. Nobody really warns you about the Tuesdays, the ordinary evenings with nothing scheduled and no one to call who’s five minutes away.

What actually helped: saying yes to things I would normally talk myself out of (a coworker’s trivia night, a neighbor’s building potluck), and giving myself an actual runway before deciding whether it was working. Ninety days, I told myself. Don’t make the call before ninety days.

It’s been over a year now. I didn’t need the full ninety, as it turns out, but having the number mattered more than I expected. It gave the hard part an end date, even if I ended up not needing it.
